WARNING OF LEGISLATION AFFECTING LANDLORDS

Late last year, the City of Farmers Branch, TX, which is near Dallas, passed an ordinance similar to those seen in parts of Pennsylvania and California, which would hold landlords and apartment owners responsible for renting to illegal immigrants. An owner who violates the ordinance, could be fined up to $500 per day. Also in Texas, the city of Marble Falls passed an ordinance prohibiting sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a place where children gather. The catch, is that this ordinance also holds rental property owners responsible and fines the property owner up to $500 a day if they rent to a sex offender living within the restricted zone. More than 40 Texas communities have passed parallel ordinances. Please forward this Update to any other Texas landlords you know in case this legislation may affect them.
